Punch Drunk Love: For lovers of arrogant and pretentious bullshit in the vein of Magnolia and Fuck This Load Of Shit: The Movie (as Punch Drunk Love is known outside of the U.S.), Punch Drunk Love has it all. From "symbolism" to "black humor" Punch Drunk Love runs the brilliant gamut from suck all the way to even more suck. The plot has some general thing about Adam Sandler breaking shit cause no one's nice to him. First of all, for all you movie reviewers who hailed Mr. Sandler's "brilliant break from character" and praised him for "delving into newer and deeper realms of cinema", every fucking movie the guy's in is about him breaking shit cause people are mean to him. It just happens to be shot with more artistic finesse than the others. As in, more artistic finesse than Big Daddy, i.e., a baboon could do it. Or a trust-fund film-school baby. But what's the difference? Oooh! Movie review AND social criticism! You're sizzling today, Dr. Exacto.
Anyway, this Adam Sandler character runs around being sad and distressed, breaking shit, and trying to make it with this woman. This is interjected with sequences of random colors that look like someone ate a shitload of Superman ice cream, puked on the fucking camera lens, and then used Windows Paint version 1.fart to touch up the rough edges. And I mean that in the best possible way. I guess this symbolizes Mr. Sandler's muddled but colorful life. Or maybe it symbolizes how much the movie sucks. Either way, its right on target. And right on target sucks. You may wonder why I use the word "suck" so much in the description of this film. You may wonder, but the only response you'll get is "Suck.". Oh, and this is not the Paul Anderson who directed such classics as Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat, and Event Horizon, even though I kinda wish it was. This is the Mr. Paul Anderson who directed such suck-fests as Punch Drunk Love. And Magnolia. Which I have not seen.
Despite all this, I thought Punch Drunk Love was a wonderful, delightful and beautiful film and Mr. Paul Anderson, I am greatly looking forward to your next movie, where you can show off your use of symbolism, montage and directorial wizardry, Resident Evil: Nemesis. |
